Hi allI want to buy an Fujitsu [EDIT!!!] Siemens Amilo L 7300 laptop (el cheapo bottom-of-the-range laptop). I took a dsl 0.8.1.1 cd in to the store - the bootup got to the penguin OK but after hitting return there was an empty screen - nothing. I'm assuming this is one of those (display??) issues where particular code(s) have to be entered at boot - but which should I try? Anyone else tried dsl on a late model Amilo? I guess I'd also have problems booting Knoppix if dsl stalls. Processor is a Celeron M 340 1.5 GHz. EDIT: Doom4 has had 0.8.2 running via USB boot on an < Amilo M 7400 > but that's a Centrino. PS: I've tried the following boot options so far:1. dsl noapic noapm noscsi nopcmcia (no change) 2. dsl vga=normal This gets an extra two lines, something about decompressing and then 'OK, booting linux kernel'. Then stalls. 3. dsl 2 (no change - won't boot further). Wondering if there isn't something wrong with the dsl cd? Posted by WoofyDugfock on Dec. 29 2004,15:15
Today I went back and tried again with dsl 0.9.0.1 and also with Knoppix-3.2-MiB-11b.Same as before unfortunately - no go at all, zilch, zero. Failsafe didn't work either. Situation terminal? Unless anyone has a suggestion, I'll forget this laptop (and perhaps similar Celeron M Amilos) - a dead loss as far as dsl/knoppix goes? A pity since it's not bad value, although Acer 1362WLMi (if it can be found in Europe that is - sold out where I am) is better value again, assuming that it will boot linux. I seem to be having this discussion entirely with myself, however I suppose this is the holiday season...Ploughing on regardless ... I don't suppose this is a syslinux thingummy issue, is it? Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 30 2004,05:51
If vga=normal and all of the failsafe stuff does not work then you are probably out-of-luck for that machine. You can try searching the Internet for generic information about that model of laptop and "Linux" or more speficially "knoppix" and hope for a magic bullet solution. Good Luck. Posted by WoofyDugfock on Dec. 30 2004,13:45
Thanks cbagger. Had done some searching, not much around about this laptop at all, except relentless uninformative web sales. There is a yahoo forum dealing specifically with Amilos and linux - that might be helpful for other models - where it was said that it hypothetically should boot[I], but all way too vague. The centrino versions are way expensive. On to try Acer I suppose. |
