The first test with DSL and my old Toshiba Satellite Pro 480 CDT notebook failed.

The boot procedure runs from CD-ROM until DSL says
"Processor 0 is Mobile Pentium MMX 233MHz". Then everything stops and does not keep on booting.

Does anybody know what the problem is and what can be done? I must confess that I have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE with Linux. Hope someone can help!?

Edit:
I discovered the possibility in the failsafe mode. It boots. Most likely it is the LAN PC Card (3com 3c589D-Combo) which DSL does not like during the boot procedure  :(

are you using the syslinux or isolinux version?

Brian,
don´t know. The name of the file is <<dsl-o.9.3.iso>>

I am getting something similar on my Toshiba Portege 7200
laptop. It gets to:

"Process 0 is Pentium III (Coppermine) 646Mhz. 256KB cache"

and then  freezes there.
I have tried the DSL NO APM and DSL TORAM options...

Anybody know what could help...I really want my gf laptop to have wireless access without going into windows. XP seems sluggish with the 192MB of RAM...I think  DSL would fare better!

Yesterday I tried to install the latest version of Knoppix as an alternative. It works fine, even with the LAN PC card. I get network connection, but the original Knoppix seems to be a bit too big for my old notebook. It runs real slow! So I will keep on with my DSL and try to get it running. The fact that Knoppix runs supports me  :D

If you can't get DSL to work, try:

knoppix desktop=fluxbox

and knoppix will run faster.

Thanks for this one! Now Knoppix runs quite nicely. With kernel 2.4 it stalled again, then I chose kernel 2.6 together with fluxbox, and now it does fine. Still it is a bit slow, but, well ... it´s okay for me.

P.S.
Problem solved: DSL runs at last. I downloaded this version: <<dsl-1.0rc1-syslinux.iso>> and now everything is close to perfect!

I've had good luck with Libranet 2.8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite pro 440cdt (P-133 w/8o Mb of RAM).  I've got a minimal install with selected packages added; it's no rocket, but it's basically an MP3 player for my car, and it works quite well for that, it's setup to get music over my LAN from my server.

I found with my Toshiba 480CDT I had to type "NOPCMCIA" on the boot command line when booting from the live CD.  Took me ages to figure out that the next boot check after the processor was the PCMCIA card.

Once installed on the HD it seems to work ok.

Hobbesian has it...   On at least one older Toshiba, DSL hung after the processor check.  Adding the NOPCMCIA boot option did the trick for me.  The good news is that once you get past that the sound chip and video chip seem to work just fine for DSL (version 1.4.0)

Good luck

Same laptop here. This is my boot line:

Quote
dsl fb800x600 lang=uk pci=biosirq nopcmcia

This boots up just fine. Now just need to sort out how to get pcmcia working and get online

Good luck

Should have read the complete thread. Tried the syslinux version and everything works just fine - in fact I am posting this from the fully working machine.

Question: does anyone have the video working properly? I still have the last few lines missing

I did originally have the problem of lines off the bottom of the screen.   I typed "vga=normal" in the LiveCD boot process, and DSL seems to have retained this setting once installed to the HD.

So my entire boot command was "dsl nopcmcia vga=normal" when I was booting the LiveCD.

At some stage I'm going to compile all my trials of getting it going into a blog somewhere.  Hopefully it'll be a good reference for me if I have to re-install anything.  Someday!

The same problem in Satellite Pro 4600. DSL boots only to info about processor.
In 'failsafe' or with 'nopcmcia' it boots until X is going to start. But then, again freeze.
PROBABLY there is a detection of graphic card (on this Toshiba - some Trident). BUT TRIDENT DRIVER FOR LINUX DOESN'T WORK IN HERE! Even other linux distros can't run X with trident driver. (they work with vesa)
SO- it is probably needed to run X with vesa or fb1024x768 mode.

so probably this should work - boot: dsl nopcmcia acpi=force fb1024x768 vga=791

I can supply you more info on my e-mail. (i will probably won't go there again)
