Try pushing the search button at the top of the page.Enter keyword: ess* and search ALL FORUMS and FROM THE BEGINNING or NEWER Posted by te5torX on May 13 2005,18:04
I don't know if you have the same card as I do. Someone just gave me a Compaq Presario 1655 and I did a dsl HD install on it. Since the soundcard didn't configure properly, I came to this forum seeking answers but found that the only advice was to search the whole forum for 'ess*', which returned way too many posts with which to waste my time.In my case, sndconfig caused a segfault when I tried to configure the card. What I did discover, however, is that the SB driver worked for my card. I was able to get sound working by simply using 'modprobe sb' (as root, of course) to load the sb drivers. At this point, I discovered that I had an IRQ conflict which I fixed by changing the IRQ in my motherboard settings. Problem solved. After that, I manually added the sound drivers to my '/etc/modules' file and it's been working flawlessly ever since. Posted by cbagger01 on May 13 2005,22:19
Supposedly the Compaq 1255 has an ESS audio sound system. So searching for ess* should get you some information on how to get an ess sound card working with DSL. But you can also use it in Soundblaster mode if you prefer.

Sure. As long as you don't mind wading through 200 useless results. Posted by cbagger01 on May 13 2005,22:53
Into everyone's life, a little rain must fall.I don't know the specific solution, but I know that it's out there and since nobody else answered the post I figured a little nudge might help. Oh well. Posted by te5torX on May 14 2005,02:36
Oh, I'm not knocking you for it. I'm glad you bumped it because it made it easier form me to find! I was just bitching about the lack of good information on the subject. Posted by tempestuous on May 14 2005,13:40
molotov and te5torX,I posted a detailed solution for ESS configuration here - < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4615 > Credit and thanks must to go schopenhauer101 for posting earlier information upon which this was based. (Perhaps I should transfer this information to the "HowTos" forum?) te5torX is on the right path with "modprobe sb" but, like me, you may also have to define the driver's hardware settings because Linux fails to autoconfigure them. And as an afternote, I recently discovered that my laptop was playing back MP3's about 4% too slow. Adding the ALSA audio driver (snd-es18xx) and using it instead of the OSS driver corrects this. It might just be a problem related to my particular Sony laptop. Craig S |
