Hey there everyone.

Im trying to make up a nice old laptop for mild use for school and travel.  My plans are currently snagging a p120 - 133 from eBay (though I cry high hell at some of the outragious prices there...), with 48 mb (seems to be a common high for alot of the ones Ive looked at) of ram.  I have a few choices for an OS on the bad boy (whenever I find one at a descent price).  Namely good ol' Win 3.1, Win 95, Zip or LoopHam, and DSL.  I don't mind Win 3.1, it served me for years, and does all I need for this laptop, same for 95, though there isnt much of an advantage there.  Zip and Loop ham I know would run fine, but are seriously outdated.  DSL would be sweet; but I wonder how fast it would actually run.

Ie: Win95 on my old 486DX33 ran..  Though start up was ages, and running most any program took ages.  I should have stuck to Win3.1, but thats another story (That was quite a whle ago now).

Anyway, how acceptable does DSL run on the p120-133 range with 32+mb of ram?  Dillo would serve fine for whatever webbrowsing I would do, as would most standard apps; though I might give  AbiWord a shot to see if it runs fast enough (somehow I doubt that tho...).  Anyones experiences would be muchly appricated!

Cheers

Bernard

I haven't used dsl on an old/slow laptop yet.  However,  I used it on a compaq desktop Pentium 1 (with mmx) I believe it's 199mhz and 96mb RAM.  I used the '  dsltoram  '  option at boot time and was able to browse the internet (dialup).  It was running really fast!

I also used dsl on a Dell desktop P1 133mhz and I believe 48-64mb RAM (i don't recall the exact amount of ram) and I was really impressed with the speed.  Dillo is great!

I have not done much wordprocessing on either setup so I can't comment on the speed of abiword with that processor or ram.  However I will say that my experience with dsl has been excellent!

One other important note/consideration.  Using old versions of windowz will expose you to viruses.  dsl (linux for that matter) is basically Virus Proof!
