I managed to use the proper startup options so the GUI works on my laptop's screen, which has a resolution of 640x480.

Several apps, however, launch with a default window size of greater than 640x480 ... including the document that launches automatically at startup from the LiveCD.

This means that I can't get to any of the corners or the titlebar of the window to move it, close it, or anything. I'm too new to Linux to know how (or if) this can be done with the keyboard.

I managed to switch to workspace 2 to get away from the startup document, but launching emelFM from there put me in the same situation again ... it's too big to get ahold of.

Help!  :p

Well, I did (correctly) think to Alt+F4 to close the too-big window ... any way to resize windows with the keyboard?

Hold down the Alt key while pressing the left mouse button should allow you to drag the window to where you can then grab the resize handle.

Also, Alt + RightMouse & dragging allows you to resize without having access to the corner of the window.  Very handy.
Another feature often overlooked is the "fluxter" 4-screens thingy in the slit (ie., the box split in four, representing your four "virtual desktops"), you can actually drag a window around in here, it's a mini-representation of the windows you have running in your desktops.  Try it.
But yeah, Alt-LeftClick&Drag and Alt-RightClick&Drag are the quickest and easiest ways of doing it (is this in the startup document?  Might be a good tip to add).

Didn't see it in there ... at least, not in the part I could see.  :D

Thanks for adding to the methods of doing this stuff ... it'll all be used at some point!

I would also like to add that
Code Sample
fb640x480
is not listed in the boot F2 options screen, although I was able to assume it would work from what is listed there. It is, apparently, a valid option and is required by my laptop. Thanks.

When using 640x480 do you see the desktop icons?
