First off in case it matters...I am running the Knoppix SVGA server on the laptop running DSL...the Kdrive servers will not work on the laptop...I have no icons on my desktop and when I run xtdesk I get the following:

dsl@box:~$xtdesk
XShape ver 1.0
IMLIB ERROR: Cannot Find Palette. A Palette is required for this mode
Segmentation Fault

My .xtdeskrc has the following:

table Config
FontName: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
FontColor: #FFFFF
ClickInterval: 500
end

Any ideas?

If color depth setting is too low (4 bit color, aka 16 colors), then the desktop icons will not appear.

The SVGA server is set to 8 bit but I'm wondering if it's a mismatch between xtdesk and the SVGA server since normally it would be using the Kdrive server?

FYI,

I just tried 8 bit framebuffer mode from inside QEMU (DSL Embedded) and the icons did not appear.

Maybe you need a minimum of 16 bit color in order to use the desktop icons?
