try searching the lilo or grub handbooks for reference to using a special parameter that relates to the "IBM Thinkpad" issue... its well known tho off the top of my head i do not know the paramters exact wording or i'd just tell you.

all else fails, d/l the ubuntu distro, write it to a cdrw then boot it and look at its options when it first tries to boot the cd.  In there in one of the screens (Screen F5 or F6 iirc) is a reference to this exact same command which is then passed to the kernel (i think) via grub.

you have to put "floppy=thinkpad" into the bootup command if booting from cd, (no quotes tho) or put that on the append line in LILO or at the end of the kernel= line of GRUB in its menu.lst  file.

btw: DSL in boot option don`t have command "floppy=thinkpad" in boot menu

boot command "DSL floppy=thinkpad" work in DSL or no?
DSL have support for old Thinkpad laptops?

in ubuntu is boot option "floppy=thinkpad - some IBM thinkpad laptops" and system work correctly without freeze..
btw: ubuntu linux required 128mb ram.. i have 64
