Hello all  I am trying to boot my Lappy with the DSL live CD and I get a blank screen.  Usually I see "ok booting the kernel" and then darkness.

Has anyone had any success with this model?  Ultimately I'd like to have DSL installed on my HD.  At present I am using my lappy with Linspire on it, and I've had success in the past with Red Hat so the thing WILL take linux.  I just dont know how.

Thanks,
lzy (nOOb)

EDIT:
After 14 Views and no responses, It's pretty apparent that no one has had any success... does anyone have any suggestions?

thx again
lzy

Some more info would be most helpful.

Did you ever see a DSL boot prompt? (isolinux vs. syslinux)
Does your CD work on another computer? (bad media?)
Did you try the syslinux version? (boot method for older systems)
If you get a prompt, did you try failsafe? ( minimal boot )

Pressing F2 and F3 at the boot prompt gives you many options to try.

If you can't get that far, and the CD boots well in other systems,
then the syslinux version of DSL would be my next step.

Sorry for the limited input, thank you for your attempt in aiding me.

When I boot from the CD I get the DSL prompt with the option to press F2 for more options.

CD Boots on Older IBM Aptiva Machines

I am now getting the syslinux version 1.3 &1.2

Failsafe got me to the same results (freezes during boot)

Trying the different video modes has gotten me nowhere.  Granted I am using the 1.2 version.  I could not conclude if problems of this type were fixed in the 1.3 version.  I am attempting to download 1.3 now

Hello ppl

I am now booting my Presario 700 with:
1.3.1 syslinux -
boot: <enter>... Blank screen
boot: dsl vga=normal... halted at "Ok, booting the kernel."
boot: failsafe... halted at "ACPI: IRQ10 SCI: Edge set to Level Trigger."

Suggestions???

Just a guess, but have you tried booting with the options noacpi or acpi=off?

According to the guy at the abovementioned website, "nolapic" is a command that it used to disable support for your local apic.

What is a local apic?

See here for a somewhat basic explanation:

bookmarked

Stuff that just doesn't work:
Ok now about this Synaptics Touchpad... how do I get DSL to use it correctly?  Upon activation (Selecting NO to the USB Mouse Option, otherwise it simply doesn't work) it quickly scrolls through the Workspaces.

Also does DSL support Hotplugging a.k.a. Plug N Play?  So far I have had no luck.

And there is a quick bar on the Presario 700 that controls volume and stuff.  Also no working.

Been scared to try the battery functions and or the suspend/sleep function.  Wait a sec... how DO I use the suspend/sleep????

Does this work:

Ok attempting:
"dsl vga=normal nolapic dsl toram dsl dma dsl pci=irqmask=0x0e98."  Selected "NO" on the USB Mouse and Yes on the IMPS/2... mouse is unchanged: X axis  scrambles through the workspaces and Y axis responds correctly... however mouse buttons are correct.

"dsl vga=normal nolapic pci=irqmask=0x0e98" same result

"dsl vga=normal nolapic dsl pci=irqmask=0x0e98"  same result

"dsl vga=normal nolapic dsl toram dsl dma dsl pci=irqmask=0x0e98"  same result.

Hmm, now what?

Also can someone tell me why my external monitor turns green?  In windows it goes green quite often, but when I use it for linux it doesn't/hasn't happen.

full of problems,
lzy

I'm no help here as I too am a noob using an old compaq presario 1230, same issues, any help ?:(

Hmm...

You can always download and install the XFree86.dsl extension from the repository.

Please be sure to read the *.info file carefully because this is not a one-click install process for this extension.

You might want to try this option

     acpi=ht

So, it's been nine days since the last post...
I'm thinking about installing DSL on my compaq as well, and I was wondering if lzy had any luck getting things the mouse and such to work. :(
