PCMCIA problem on Compaq Presario 1080Forum: Laptops Topic: PCMCIA problem on Compaq Presario 1080 started by: Aratsu Posted by Aratsu on July 30 2005,19:46
Hello,Today I decided to resurrect a relic of the past, i.e. my old Compaq Presario 1080 (32mb RAM, 1.4GB hard drive, P166MMX, PCMCIA (no cardbus support), and although I got DSL running and everything, I am unable to use any of my PCMCIA cards with it (specifically, an offbrand Prism2 PCMCIA card, model number WLC010). I'm not sure if the PCMCIA support is even working at all. When I insert any PCMCIA cards (So far I've tried a 32mb FlashATA card, and said wireless card), nothing comes up in the `dmesg' results about me insertting anything. On bootup, I get this line: Linux Kernel Card Services 3.1.22 options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm] Intel ISA PCIC probe: not found Databook TCIC-2 PCMCIA probe: not found. Anyone know of a way to fix my PCMCIA support, or should I try something drastic to see if there is any hardware problems (Like try it in Windows). Previously, I had 98 running on this thing, and up until I shelved the device, everything worked fine, including the wireless card (I used this system daily as my email/web browsing machine before switched to PPC platform). Followup, I just looked on google and remembered about cardmgr. I tried to run it and got the result: cardmgr[268]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devicesNow why would it not be loading my pcmcia driver? Posted by Aratsu on July 30 2005,19:59
Ergh. Seems that the PCI bridge on my laptop, Cirrus Logic CL 6729, has some issues with Linux, or something.

i had the same problem with my compaq presario 1060 ages ago when i first got into DSL, i remember it being something to do with the cirrus logic bridge, i also tried other versions of linux but still fail to get the pcmcia cards to workgreat little laptop, would love to get some use out of it but with the network kinda pointless Posted by txschap on Sep. 10 2005,00:56
I have an old Sharp 9070 with the same Cirrus Logic CL 6729 (rev fe) and the same issue. I'd like to put DSL on it and give it to my 11 yo son. The screen is beautiful and I hate the idea of putting M$ Windoze 98 back on it.

FYI, I have tried Puppy and Feather too with the same results. LNX-BBS did cause my Orinoco NIC to flash, indicating that the PCMCIA portion worked, but the framebuffer did not. I have to have the GUI too. arrrrrg!
