I installed DSL on a Toshiba Satellite 115cs (Same as a 110 according to Toshiba). I did a HD Install. However XWindows looks HORRIBLE, the colors are wrong. However, when I use an external monitor, everything looks fine. Here are the specs from Toshiba:Video Specs: ------------ Video Memory 1MB Speed 60NS Controller Chip C&T65548 Bus Type: Vesa Local Bus Graphics Accelerator: BitBLT Support Color Palette: 262,144 colors Internal Resolution: 800x600x256 colors Refresh Rate(Vet/Hor) 75HZ/60HZ External Resolution: 800x600 64k colors 1024x768 256 colors. This was from toshiba's site (pdf) --------------------------------------- I tried running xsetup.sh. When I choose xfbdev I get the following error when i run startx XIO fatal IO error 104 otherwise if I choose the other choice of Xvesa I get bad colors. Thanks, john Posted by clivesay on Sep. 14 2005,17:47
you get bad colors choosing xvesa 800x600 16bit? If you get an 'undefined mode' error at boot try booting with dsl vga=normal.Chris Posted by Your Fuzzy God on Sep. 14 2005,17:48
Have you tried 800x600 @ 16-bit resolution?----Edit--- Darn Clivesay and his fast typing! Posted by santarosajr on Sep. 14 2005,17:55
Since I did a hd-install I don't seem to get a chance to enter boot parameters.

I did try 800x600 with 16 bits, it still looks really bad

Run xsetup and try the values I gave before. Chris Posted by santarosajr on Sep. 14 2005,18:09
Also, when I boot up using a floppy, it says modprobe: Can't locate module fb0Previously I had done a poor man's install. Posted by clivesay on Sep. 14 2005,18:27
Try the xvesa instead of framebuffer.

have had any luck with it yet?... I've tried before on a 110cs but no luck though I know it is possible to get the colors right though I had the same problem with Deli linux but I managed to solve it but changing to some obscure setting like 15bit color or something wierd like that... but not sure of how to do that with fb or xvesa...

on my toshiba 110cs , installing xfree solved my issues..Otherwise I was stuck in 4-color mode, without icons, or a bizarre 8/16 color mode.. 73 ke4nt Posted by andrewb on Oct. 06 2005,23:11
You probably don't need xfree see :< http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Vga%3Dxxx > and < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=9015 > Posted by otherguy on Oct. 20 2005,00:33
Ke4nt, do you have a frugal or a regular hd install?I have a poorman's install of dsl 1.5 on a tosh 110cs which I hope to convert to a frugal install, dual boot with windows. It boots up noicons OK except for the bad colors. When I try to boot with xfree86.dsl, everything is fine until it trys to load the extension. Then there is page after page full of 'Cannot create directory ... no space left on drive." Not enough ram? ram = 40M hda3: 128M linux swap - recognized & used by dsl hda4: 256M ext2 - persistant home & opt hda5: 65M fat16 - KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX and xfree86.dsl Boot message: Ramdisk 28240K from syslinux.conf on boot floppy: APPEND ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off vga=normal initrd=minirt24.gz atapicd noscsi noideraid nosound nopcmcia nousb nofirewire noicons minimal nomce noapic noapm mem=40M quiet BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix home=hda4 opt=hda4 Andrewb's solution didn't work eithr. Any help appreciated. Don Posted by _pathos on Oct. 27 2005,00:45
I've got a 110cs and it works great with 4bit colour. 8 bit doesn't work proberly. The gfx card on these machines really is weird. |
