Hi, I have an ancient Toshiba Tecra510CDT. Spec: Model name/No. Tecra 510CDT / PA1232U-T2xx Processor Intel Pentium® 133MHz w/VRT Memory(MAX) 16MB/144MB HDD 2.02GB Display Display TFT Active Matrix Color 12.1 968x726 Display controller C&T HIQV32 (CT65550) Video RAM 2MB Sound CS4232, OPL3(YMF262), YAC512 PC Card controller TypeIIx2 or TypeIIIx1 IrDA IrDA 1.1:4Mbps USB (none) Modem 28.8/14.4Kpbs Data/Fax/Voice LAN (none) ******************************** It currently runs Win 95. Can i run DSL on this system?? If so, what would be the best way to go about it? Boot from within the host operating system? I read that DSL is light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram. But mine is not DX is it? would DSL run on only 16MB or Ram? I just got the laptop today preinstalled with win/95 however, i don't have the disc. Therefore, as it does currentl work with '95 i want to be sure before deleting it off that i can replace it with a working GNU/Linux system. If anyone can then it looks like DSL is the only contender. I appreciate your coments and thank you in advance for your help, regards -- livingdaylight Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Sep. 25 2005,20:59
it will run fine. Toss winslow and install DSL.

lolz...thank you for your reassurance. Well, we'll see. If it doesn't work i'll have lost windoze but that's ok. I did get this laptop practically free and its there to play with. Can you, however, or anyone for that matter, direct me to the right iso. I should be able to boot from cd-rom but i see so many different iso's. some have .txt some md5sum etc. I am not experienced in burning iso's and i confess, a plain newbie, so your help is all the more appreciated, regards, livingdaylight, ********************* eggs make chickens to make more eggs Posted by livingdaylight on Sep. 25 2005,21:13

livingdaylight,You need 2 files: dsl-1.5.iso and dsl-1.5.iso.md5.txt dsl-1.5.iso is the image file 50MB and dsl-1.5.iso.md5.txt is its checksum file. The checksum file will be used for checking in CD burning program. burn it ... boot it ... play it and have fun Posted by livingdaylight on Sep. 26 2005,07:52
I've burnt it now trying to boot it. I don't know how to get into BIOS on the laptop. It just boots straight into Win'95 i insert cd and it still boot into '95 on reboot. On the desktop getting inot Bios to set bootload to cd for example is a matter of pressing F2 on my desktop. But the laptop does not give me a chance to get into Bios, Your continued assistance is much needed and well appreciated, regards, livingdaylight Posted by hs7sv on Sep. 26 2005,09:00
Try this way to get to the BIOS: press the ECS key at the START of the boot process ... press it continually then a F1 message appears ... good luck Posted by livingdaylight on Sep. 26 2005,11:12
thanks for that. Yes, i could get into Bios (version 6.4) but there is not boot from cd option that i coud find. I might have to boot up from floppy? Aside from that i still wonder whether i could successfully run 'X' from this system with only 16MB of Ram. I spoke to someone who couldn't install even with 32 MB of Ram. When DSL says that it can run with as little as 16MB of Ram does that include 'X' ? or does that mean DSL is running from command line only? Thank you for your clarification and help, regards, livingdaylight |
