!!SOLVED!!this laptop does not have agp support....that'd be the alpha and omega of it all /bonk _self <head> This Gateway Solo 2500 has NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD NM2160 video vesa 2.0 compliant, with intel 440bx/82443bx chipset, 366mhz Pii Pentium CPU, 288mb total ram, 12gb hdd, fdd, DVD/CD ROM, Zoom Video Port(by way of pcmcia slot), rt2500 based pcmcia wireless nic(works great). Running DSL HDD install and a dead chicken to get it setup with color working without having to boot from CD(chicken trick works in this instance i'll be posting a hand holding step x step for this machine soon and will edit to include the agp enable once i'm savvy of it) AGP is disabled at this moment, Question is: How to Enable AGP on this laptop, i currently have to use xfbdev xserver using :~$dsl vga=788 on first boot to get a good color screen, xvesa does not work in any mode available from wysiwyg(and also has AGP disabled) With AGP disabled this computer is refreshing screen slow and scrolling is "wavy" though even with this problem its out performing win98 on this machine. Please if you know how to get AGP enabled using defualt kdrive tiny x server that comes with DSL or how to install and get agp working in good color using Xfree86 reply here send email to me. would agp_try_unsupported=1 work? and how do i use it?I found this:
So Am hoping to find out how to use that information to maybe get this agp enabled on my gateway solo 2500 under DSL Please help if you can. Rob Posted by tempestuous on Oct. 25 2005,14:55
Rob,I can see that you want better graphics performance, but I don't necessarily think this will be achieved by AGP tweaking. I, too, have a NeoMagic 128XD (NM2160) chipset in my Sony laptop ... although this laptop is pre-AGP. Even when working properly, the xfbdev drivers give only limited performance. I think you just need to install a more powerful X-Server. The obvious option is the XFree86 mydsl package, but there's a smaller package that I found works great with NeoMagic adaptors - the XF86_SVGA X-server. Cool thanks, I'll give that a go when i get back from shopping etc...

I have a NeoMagic 128XD in my laptop too.I've got it working fine with the XFree86 dsl package. The only thing that doesn't work is MPlayer, it says the video out device isn't found. So tempestuous, have do you use XFree86 or XF86_SVGA on that laptop? Does MPlayer work for you using xv (or x11) as the video output? Can I get XF86_SVGA from the KNOPPIX website? Or do I grab it from a KNOPPIX CD? Thanks Posted by tempestuous on Nov. 10 2005,12:36
Actually, the Sony laptop is running a remastered version of Puppy Linux ... with XF86_SVGA X-server.It's a long time since I tried the XF86_SVGA X-server with DSL, but I think MPlayer worked OK. Try mikshaw's mplayer-xfree86.tar.gz version. This version should suit either the full XFree86 or XF86_SVGA. And with both drivers I believe you should choose "x11" as the output device. The download link for XF86_SVGA is mentioned in the forum post I referred to. Posted by neonuke on Nov. 12 2005,07:23
yeah I got it working now, i had to choose the video codec, (the file I was testing was a divx).I'm using the xfree86 dsl, with my own compiled version of mplayer. it's really slow on my laptop, it will play the first few frames and just freeze, the seek keeps going, but the movie doesn't move. I'm guessing there's no way to get -vo xv to work is there? I can get x11 working, but it's really slow... |
