my apt-get is not working... tryed to install symantic so i could access all the cool apps that came with dsl... heres exactly what i typed (after getting root):

apt-get install symantic

then i got a few lines with the msg:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg - open (2 no such file or directory)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg), are you root?

@_@
now i tryed to go to the aforementioned dir, and it didnt exist after all... should i make one?
yes i was root
it may matter that the pc is not hooked up to the web in any way...?
could someone help me out?

You need to restore the dpkg directory on your DSL system before you can use apt-get.

Either connect to the Internet and run the dpkg-restore script as root, or download the dpkg compressed tar file on another computer and copy it over to your DSL-based computer.

Here is the download link:

< http://damnsmalllinux.org/dpkg.tar.gz >

Also, please use the "search" button near the top of this page and search for "apt" or "dpkg" for more help.

Good Luck.
