I am a totally new to all of this. Thought I would get away from Windows and give er a shot. I went through the steps and got it installed on the HD and have messed with the sound a bit but still working on it. My biggest question at this point is though, after I download something what do I do to install it and how do I know what to type?

first, you need to restore the dpkg system.this is easy. in the menu, go Apps>Tools>Enable Apt *Note: you need an active internet connection to do this* next, since you are just moving over from M$ WindoZzz you'll probably want the nice GUI frontend to Apt - Synaptic. to enable Synaptic, just go Apps>Tools>got memory & bandwidth>Synaptic it is a significantly larger download than dpkg, so it could take a while. afterwards, just run Synaptic and it'll let you choose any package in the Debian "Stable" .deb servers. if you want more up-to-date apps, you want the "unstable" tree. to do this simply change the file at /etc/apt/sources.list to look like this.
hope this helps! ^_^ -J.P. SaidinUnleashed Posted by zepster on Aug. 18 2004,02:31
I did everything you have listed above. I got a ton of errors when downloading and installing Synaptic but don't know if they are signifigant. The manager comes up, gives warnings like "Couldn't stat source package list http:ftp.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.dabian.org_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)" I get 3 that are like that when the manager starts up.Also when I try to mark something for installation in the lists, I get an error saying that the packages have unmet dependencies and won't be marked for installation or upgrade. You may have a typo in your sources.list...Using your last post, your url line needs to read like this.. "deb < http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ > unstable main non-free contrib" Your post is missing the forward slashes after the "http" .. Could be just a typo in your post.. but check it.. 73 ke4nt Posted by zepster on Aug. 18 2004,04:01
Yes, typo on my part in the post. It's in there correct though.

okay, i have been able to duplicate your problem (got high speed connection, today, YAY!!!) on my 7.3 install. it looks like a new version of synaptic was recently moved into the testing area of debian and that new version breaks DSL. every time, for me at least. something about libice(something) not being present. what's worse is that after a restart, a lot of things don't work properly. for example, when fluxbox loads up, the icons don't come up, and the side panel, slit, and bbpager (i think that's what the little 3 desktop display thing is called) are discolored and somewhat pixilated. admittedly, synaptic will come up, but if you try to install anything, you get errors. not a LOT of errors, but enough that it's obvious that something is broke... what i would do, and am doing, for that matter, after a fresh install, is NOT download synaptic and just use apt, until this problem gets worked out. lots of fun... -J.P. I have no clue how to use apt-get. I mean, I know how to get into the root and have used it when told what to type, but no idea how to know what to type in when I download something. Just plain clueless on it. Thank you all very much for all of your help. For instance, I would like to see if one of the versions of Yahoo messenger work on DSL. Sure, it downloads but then where does it go and what do I do with it from there?

Saiden,With the new synaptic, you must have the dsl-dpkg.dsl installed before using it.. ( with the original contrib, there were some issues with it overwriting some of the files included in the new dsl-dpkg.dsl ) I have pulled out all of the dpkg stuff from the app.. That's why you need the latest version of dsl-dpkg.dsl.. Make sure you are using a current version of dsl-dpkg.dsl, as there have been many changes to it in recent weeks.. Keep us posted on your progress.. 73 ke4nt Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Aug. 20 2004,03:39
hmm. is the dpkg.dsl the same as the Enable Apt link in the menu?cause that's what i do first before trying to install Synaptic. and actually, i think the problem is with a part of the newest version of apt, called pango, i think. a font manager, if i remember right. cause i get the exact same error when i try to run Downloader for X... and i get the same error now when i try to run AxFTP... i think i'm gonna reinstall in the morning, cause now, nothing is working, except Links and nAIM... this is a little bit annoying... -J.P. Did you run the ' .re_xtdesk.pl ' file ?It will rebuild your desktop.. If you can get in emelfm, if not exit x, then startx That will rebuild it too See if that makes your desktop icons work.. Usually means a bunk install or extension.. Let me know... I pulled powermanga earlier today.. It kept sending my cpus to 100% and stuck there I pulled freeciv today Kept breaking GTK libs and giving errors.. If you were using those apps, try restarting DSL from boot 73 ke4nt Posted by DonttPanic on Aug. 20 2004,13:09
I'm not sure if this is significant, but the error message said dabian, not debian, and said the directory did not exist. So it's definitely a typo on someone's part Posted by zepster on Aug. 31 2004,00:48
I wiped it all out and am starting over. So far seems to be going well. I'll keep you updated on how the new install goes. You're all very helpful and I really appreciate it!!!!

I see that most of these posts refer to using theApps > Tools > got memory & bandwidth > Synaptic to install the Synaptic package... Has anyone experienced these issues using the synaptic.dsl in the repository ? I only stripped out the dpkg from it, so you must install dsl-dpkg.dsl prior to using it.. In DSL 0.8 , I'm having a blast using the synaptic extension. I originally rebuilt it from a contribution by vabene04 for the DSL 0.7.x series.. It works great.... The synaptic script from menu has been thru many changes from the 0.6 X series to the present.. Perhaps it is in need of some touchup from Debian changes as well as DSL progress.. 73 ke4nt Posted by zepster on Aug. 31 2004,05:24
I added my plea for help in another thread under someone having the same problem as I am having with Synaptic. I just need the answer spelled out for me since I'm so new. All went well on the install until I got to that point.
