I have dpkg installed, but whenever I try to install a package (downloaded from the debian repositories) it says dpkg can't find its status information.

Also, where can I find the packages listed under the "Packages" section of the main web site (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/packages.html)

My end goal is to have accelerated X with touchscreen support (mutouch driver). The tinyX (or whatnot) doesn't seem to allow one to use touchpad drivers or even an XF86Config (or xorg.conf as the case may be), which seems to be in order.

Thanks in advance!

I think you forgot to apt-get update

I think that list is outdated.

TinyX just uses parameters passed to upon execution (see .xserverrc).  If you wish to use the full XFree86 server, there is v4.3 available as 2 extensions under mydsl, which will use XF86Config or XF86Config-4 (see .info)
