"E: Could not open lock file /var /lib/dpkg/lock - open (2 No such file or directory)"

"E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

what does this mean and how do I fix it so I can install the stuff?

Have you downloaded the dsl-dpkg.dsl file and installed it?

Otherwise, you have no dpkg to work with.

If you have the dsl-dpkg.dsl installed , how did you install it?

Use the MyDSL icon and click "Get It" on the dsl-dpkg.dsl in the system area
Once installed ("Done") , open a shell, and sudo su to root
Once root, type "apt-get update"
Once completed, you should be able to "apt-get" anything in the debian repository.

cool....  welcome.

Enjoy..

Look around in the repository, either thru the MyDSL icon,
or thru your browser , ( more details thru browser)

Go Here...

All the "extensions" listed are tested and easily install to DSL.
Most include icons and menu additions, making them much easier to use
than the "apt-get" installs, with no "dependency" issues ..

Since you are new to Linux and thus new to DSL. May I suggest to explore the system menu fully. There are two tools available on the system menu to aide in using apt and debian packages.

Apps->Tools->Enable Apt with setup your machine to use the Debian apt system.  Also Apps->Tools->Synpatic which is a graphical tool to view and install deb files.

The repository is a collection of prebuilt packages made for DSL running from a liveCD or other compressed install. They are typically much easiler to use and install and including those with hard drive installed systems. Just a note concerning hard drive installs. There is no mechanism to uninstall. For liveCD a simple reboot is all that is needed to start over.
