libpaper1 won't configureForum: Apt-get Topic: libpaper1 won't configure started by: smee Posted by smee on June 23 2005,05:58
ok. dsl is great - i've used it since the beginning, and each time a try a new (full or mini) distro, i switch back.here's the problem. trying to get my samsung laser printer working. that means i need new drivers. every package i try to add - cups or anything print related, gets stuck on libpaper1 dpkg error 1... and it wont configure, and then i can't install anything dependent on that, and am stuck with no printer. i've tried seemingly every option in apt-get and dpkg, installing and re-installing, forcing every option, ignoring faults... to no avail. any ideas on how i can get libpaper1 working? "dpkg reported error 1" doesn't really tell me much about why it fails. Posted by clacker on June 23 2005,12:16
smee, arrrrgh is right! I had this same problem trying to install tetex. I narrowed it down to two lines in /var/lib/dpkg/info/libpaper1.postinstdb_get libpaper/defaultpaper or ucf --debconf-ok /etc/papersize.dpkg-inst /etc/papersize I think it's the second because when I try to run this as root on the command line, it gives no error but also doesn't create the /etc/papersize file. I wasn't able make it work with any of the things I tried. It looks like the last part of that script looks at the md5 sum of /etc/papersize.dpkg-inst and compares it to the md5sum of the /etc/papersize that should be there. If they are the same file, you might be able to cp /etc/papersize.dpkg-inst /etc/papersize, remove that whole section from the file, and trying apt-get -f install again. Then you don't get the error. hmmm... you took it one step further.i tried running both of those script lines, and found another possible problem. running the first line gives "db_get: command not found"what package is db_get from? Posted by ke4nt1 on June 23 2005,15:24
...anyone try the cups.dsl in the testing area??I didn't see any samsung drivers in it, but it may get you past this stopping point ? 73 ke4nt Posted by smee on June 23 2005,16:11
trying cups.dls now - you know the samsung ml-1740 comes with drivers and software for LINUX!!! go, samsung. it's all KDE (win-cough) of course, and i can't get the install even to start.

That's the weird thing. I seached on debian for packages containing db_get but it didn't find any! I assumed since I did see a message box querying the paper size and the /etc/papersize.dpkg-inst file was created with that paper size that it all went OK. Posted by smee on June 23 2005,17:22
good news. cups.dsl solved the problem - the samsung install disc required that first. now i can run the setup.sh from the samsung website. (LLPD) - just have to get this working now... it's being fussy.other ml-1740 users, i've been reading about problems. cups.dsl seems to be the way to get it on... also, i think you need to be running XFree86 - last i tried to install under root (still running the old DSL X) it didn't work. ...as far as I know, you only need to set a root password to get into the webmin-type config.. ( sudo passwd - follow prompts ) 73 ke4nt Posted by smee on June 23 2005,19:28
and now we're getting sidetracked. the installed seemed to work beautifully. llpr replaces lpr and cups, but somehow required them to be there... my printer is detected, either usb or through paralell, and then called "lp" or whatever i want... BUT now...i notice that the terminal behind the lpr (llpr) window is telling me that it can't connect to the server... can't find lp:box so next step, i try to make sure the server is running. i start cups, i try to start lpr using the dsl menu, which now doesn't work. no change. it sees the printer, but it cant set it up. i can't even print a test page...any ideas?
