hi everyone, i am new to linux
I've been trying to run linux off the cd withour installing in my pentium 4 machine running xp.
I've change it to boot from the cd.
Everything seems to run fine, until the final step.
I can see everything is setting up but until the final step just before you can see the desktop load up, my pc goes blank, black on screen without anything.
I've tried to try it on my older machine, and i can get it to run jjust fine
Any idea for me?
Thank you

Did you ever solve your problem with getting it to run from the cd?  I have the same difficulty on my pentium 4 machine--everything seems to be detected and sets up but at the end the screen goes blank and nothing further happens.

I posted the same query a couple of weeks ago. Lot of looks but no reply. The link below contains an answer scrool down to "Using DSL from the CD." I tried loading DSL a couple of times, but it seems to conflict with wifi or modem settings. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.  I followed the directions on the link you included but still no good.  The link mentioned that you would be in a desktop called fluxbox with no start button--right click to start.  That didn't work so I tried rebooting again and noticed that in the loading screen it said to hit f2 or f3 to get options.  One option was to choose the desktop (fluxbox or a different one).  I selected fluxbox but got a message that its kernal couldn't be found.  I tried selecting the other choice and also got a message that its kernal couldn't be found so I just let the booting continue until it completed.  Unfortunately it was the blank screen again--right clicking on it did nothing so I guess I'll never get to try dsl out.

There seems to be more hurdles to using DSL: there's apparently no boot program on the CD (from LinuxUser mag.) to enable booting from floppy drive. Also, no instructions about how to make a linux boot f/disc. As the LinuxUser mag. emphasised that DSL could work on low-spec. PCs (which can only boot from f/disc or HD, it's irritating that they seem to give no boot program or guidance about how to create a bootable floppy.
I tried using the downloaded RAWWRITE boot prog. but again no guidance.
