I've been trying out numerous distros and DSL is the latest.

None really suit me so far but all have the same problem; I can't get email. I can get on the net just fine, once I got a real modem, found out that PPP was the program to get it started but email just won't work. My ISP says it's not them. They don't care what OS I'm using.

But all I get is "login failed" when I ask for the mail.

Any ideas?

Roger

Hi Roger,
You need to supply a few more details:
which e-mail? sylpheed, Opera, other? webmail, pop3 account?
type of modem? dial-up? adsl?

In the meantime, If you say you can get onto the web, then you should be able to access you ISP and pop account using something like Mail2web:

http://www.mail2web.com/

Put in your account username and details and call up you inbox on the server where you can read, reply, forward etc.
It's free.

Yes, should have added that in the first place.

I'm running an AMD Athlon, 850MHz, 512M RAM and using whatever is on the DSL live CD v 2.1. I have an external 56k modem on ttyS1  with dial up connection to my ISP.

I've tried 6 or more different distros and currently have PCLinuxOS installed in it's own partitions.

I can get into the net but can't get into the mail server. The ISP says "login failed". It's a POP3 setup, using the same settings that work under Win98SE.

Hmm...

Are your user accounts case sensitive?  Do you need to enter uppercase and lowercase letters for usename and password?

No.

And they're all lower case anyway.
