From the point where I put "#" to the point where "#" shows up again might be irrelevant information, but if you are wondering how my problem came to be then you should read it.

##########################

I recently picked up a huge interest for linux after having been repeatedly frustrated with the ever-so unreliable windows.

Well there's one Linux distro I downloaded (I won't disclose the name as it might be considered advertising.)

The program ran via LiveCD

I used the only CD I had to burn the ISO image because I thought this would be the only distro I'd need, based on Screenshots and info.

But I was wrong, the program was crappy, The language was screwed up, and I couldn't do anything to the settings because all of the options were in the foreign language so I couldn't change the language to english and I couldn't fix the resolution (half of the desktop was cut off because of the default resolution.)

###############################

Now here's my problem.

I have no more CDs, and I cannot purchase any more. until probably next month. So I cannot run this Linux distro via LiveCD. I read on the site that you can install to harddrive, or run it while in Windows. I was looking for instructions on how to do it, but I could not find any.

So my question is, How do I install and run DSL to my harddrive without having to use the LiveCD technique? If it helps, my operating system is XP Home Edition and I have a 120 gig harddrive (with about 80 gigs remaining.)

Sorry to be hard-headed, but may I have a link?

I can't find anything that says dsl embedded to run in windows or anything of the sort.

Also, will the hard drive based installation or side-by-side emulation along with windows running simultaneously require me to partition hard disk space ? If so this may become a bit of an issue.

My OS disc for XP is ruined and I can't use it anymore and I never made a back-up. So do any of these installation methods require partitioning?

And if so, can partitioning be done "without" the OS disc for XP? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a pen(usb) drive? If you can set your PC to boot from removable devices, then you can use that (along with a startup floppy) to boot your system. This is what I had to do to get my new DSL download running.

*ETA* I should also mention that you can install DSL right off the usb drive the first time you run it by typing "install" (w/o quotes) at the (boot:) prompt, rather than just hitting enter.

Not everyone is a Linux expert. Personally speaking, I had never used Linux before in my life, and honestly couldn't get DSL to run within Windows. I don't see why one would want to do that, considering it would eat a lot of memory and be quite slow.

Yes but i was just looking for any possible way to run DSL, even if it meant running it inside of Windows.

But by Pen Drive do you mean like a small device that plugs right into the USB port of your computer and you can just start transferring files? If so, I have a small one that's about 64mb, if not then I dunno.

Also, I have a PSP. It has a 256 megabyte memory stick, and connects to my PC via a USB cable (5 pin) I can transfer files (any types of file) to and from the PSP. Can I somehow also use that? If so, how do I get it to run like this?
