all ipods use the apple fs. so there is no way to mount it the classical way. if you format it with FAT32, it doesn't play mp3s anymore.

Struppi,

that is not entirely true. The Windows version of iTunes has a menu to "enable disk use". It formates the ipod with FAT32 and still allows you to store and play your tunes. It lets your iPod work as a regular USB hard drive. See iPod/iTunes manuals for details.

I have my iPod (Video) setup like this and it shows up as /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 in Linux. I can mount /dev/sda2 just fine as VFAT.

The only limitation is that Apple does not allow you to access your tunes via the USB drive. For that you will still need some special tools or iTunes.

So to use your iPod as a USB hard drive with DSL
1. plug iPod in the USB port of your Windows box
2. start iTunes: Edit->preferences->iPod->Music->enable disk use
(careful: this may erase all your tunes!)
3. plug iPod in the USB port of your DSL box
4. boot DSL
5. use the mount tool to mount sda2

Have fun,

nice trick, but you still need windows, so  the extensions are the right (and more elegant) way for dsl.
