Rather than shut down and restart X just to read old output, you can press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to view your initial terminal, and Alt+F2 to get back to X. If you have virtual terminals running, F2 would be replaced by a higher key. This doesn't display very much info, though. The most useful thing I can think of, after boot has completed, is to run dmesg|less
