Hi.

I'm very impressed by DSL. ATM, I run it under qemu as guest (emulation only, 256mb RAM) and it's still blazingly fast.

Why is it so MUCH faster than a default debian (testing) installation? i.e. I can ping a local host almost in real-time with DSL, but in debian (also as guest under qemu emulation) there's a considerable delay until I see any output written (even on the command line without X).

Is it the 2.4 kernel that's so MUCH better suited for qemu guests than kernel 2.6 or is there any other reason?

Part of it is the 2.4 kernel that makes DSL faster but the majority of it is the overall slimmed down system. The quickness of a windows manager like fluxbox or jwm over KDE or Gnome is also a big part. I have tested dozens of live distros with Qemu and there are only a handful that are not dead slow. Out of the fast ones I have found that DSL is easily in the top 3 (if not the top one) and application selection is the best.
