It is more difficult to get it to work, if you choose scsi for your virtual disk. Also after the first boot a Virt machine will not boot from a cdrom unless you change the setting in the bios(Of The VM).
With IDE, typical redhat type and I do not typically run a swap file. Make your Virt disk about 250 megs (change to what you want)and allocate all the space (makes it faster). Then when installing DSL under VMware, the best way I have found is to use an iso image and mount it as your cdrom. When it boots up. Do a typical hard drive install and you are finished.
Screen resolution is best left at the default, until vmtools are installed.
FYI, installing vmware tools can be tricky, review there howto for a "manual" install of vmware tools.
