I have a hard drive install of DSL on my laptop.  I was wondering if there is a way to set it so the screen can turn off after 10 minutes or if there are any other power management options for laptops.  Is it the grub commandline option? DMA apic=no that suff?

In reguards to the upgrade part of my topic, is it possible to upgrade to the Linux Kernel used for DSL-N without upgrading to it?  It sounds stupid I know but I got my DSL feeling quite nice and I like the preinstalled apps.  The only thing is I am not limited by hard drive space.  Im just limited by cpu power (266mhz 92ram).
Why do I want to upgrade?  I want the newer linux kernel in hopes it will support more things.  In particular wifi and hopefully speed (unsure about that part but meh its a reasonable hope)

Last question... video codecs.  Can I hope for Divx or Xvid playback?  I have installed the codec pack and well I don't know how to use it.  VLC doesn't seem to play anything, XMMS does great with mp3s, XINE is laggy, and the other player just never starts.

Thank you

On-the-fly settings can be changed with `xset`.  Permanent settings can be changed by editing your .xserverrc (look up your respective X server).

What extra support do you need? Afaik quite a number of wifi chipsets work within DSL, but you could always try DSL-N first...

I used mplayer for video playback, but for some reason with my XFree86 video driver I have to use the x11 video output plugin only for divx/xvid (codecs are included in package).
