Well, I guess I would make the point that smaller size doesn't mean better if the smaller distribution doesn't work with one's hardware or do what one wants it to do.
You could propose a challenge: 1) Agree on a core set of functions (e.g., boot, browse the web, play an audio file, etc.). 2) Download Basic Linux and time the process of copying it to HD or floppy, booting and performing those core functions (if indeed Basic Linux can do them - include time to download and configure extra modules). 3) Download a DSL ISO and time the process of burning a CD, booting and performing the core functions.
It'll depend on the hardware and the desired functions, but I bet for most people going the DSL route would be faster and easier.
On another note, one 50MB business card-size CD IS smaller than two floppy disks (two floppies being one option for booting Basic Linux) ! :-)
