When I click on the underscore ('_') symbol up in the upper right hand corner of any window, it should make the window go to the bar at the bottom of the screen.  Instead, it seems to kill the window just as the 'X' is supposed to do.  Once I click on the '_', I can't find the app anywhere.  It doesn't matter if it is dillo, an xterm or anthing else.

Any suggestions?

That was the place where I expected it to be but there is no indication of it.

An example of this is where I brought up Scite and then iconitied it, nothing new appears in the area at the bottom.  In an xterm I did 'ps aux | grep scite' and I can see that the process is indeed still running.  Could X be installed incorrectly?

I agree with Modrak any minimised applications should be on the bar at the bottom. Try clicking on the arrows on the right hand end of the bar, this (I beleive) should cycle through any programs presently on that desktop.
