I have no idea why this is happening to you, I am using 0.5.3.1 and also 6.0 and do not have this occur.
I do have this related problem, however:
I cannot resize windows, or drag them around with the titlebar. Only happens on one machine, where I have a serial mouse. I don't have a ps-2 mouse port, or a USB port, so I am stuck with a serial mouse. I think they call this a bus mouse, too.
Anyway, I can open a rxvt terminal, and type "mouseconfig", and get all kinds of choices to set up the mouse. This won't work, apparently, in DSL, and we use the choices given at bootup of DSL.
The problem may be related to the mouse setup on this one machine.
If I try and drag the window around, then the open window "flashes" or
something like that, and won't move.
I do have a working mouse, it just cannot do everything one usually gets to do on a Linux or DSL installation. I get along with it, however.
---
We need more choices at bootup of DSL, to allow us to pick all of the mouse selections offered by mouseconfig.
---
There is the possibility that there is a Knoppix cheatcode for it, but I have not found it.
---
Also, I cannot "select text" with the mouse, for instance if I wanted to
select part of this post, I cannot.
---
I am assuming this is all mouse driver related, and if I could select the correct driver for my mouse in DSL, then all would be fine.
---
???

I see the right and left scroll arrow at the bottom.  On the left they let me scroll to different workspaces and that works fine.  However, the ones on the right do not scroll to anything that has been iconified.  It only lets me jump from window to window if they are open.

Oh well.  I guess I will do a reinstall.

I have a similar problem.  Install went fine, connected to the internet without trouble... tried to look at a few sites and the window closed on me.  Tried a few other thing and the windows just closed on me for no apparent reason.  Love the look and feel of DSL.  Any ideas?

Yeah, it's very possible... when you have e.g. 32 megs and no swap file (swap file usage is shown by the gold small stripe in the left bottom corner when you "enhance" your desktop) everything just dissapears..
