When I got the idea of looking up a small live-CD dist for use with an old laptop, I made a shopping list. The dist I chose should a) run on the old laptop, b) be minimal in its look, c) be code-friendly, with little more needed features than a decent window manager and Python.

At  DSL, I got most of that on the CD.

Now, after two hours of casual use, in two short sittings, I run my laptop on a DSL hd install, and things are gravy.

The MyDSL manager is a dream. I was elated when I saw the list of UCI files including Python 2.3. Clicking Get it I just sat back in amazement; this dist has it all, even newbie friendliness.

Now I am a revolutionary, and I aim to bring the good news to the world.

I'm sure I will run into things, sooner or later, as I do have a 64mb USB dongle lying around. (But I'll save that for a later date, now I shall just ease around, and take it slow; I want to explore what is already installed with the package.)

This board seems friendly enough, and there is real work going on here.

Could I be so bold as to suggest a wiki for the user-added documentation effort? Preferably a wiki one had to log into to edit files.

Now, before I send this, I just want to extend my gratitude to the users of this very forum: you've equipped me with knowledge and that is as good as gold. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The FAQ threads are perfect. Question and answer, very simple. (And the chaotic format suits me fine; right now all FAQ answer data is learning to me.)

Update: I could go on heaping praise on people, as I just found the ruby.dsl package. It was compiled by one robert at damnsmalllinux dot org. Thanks, R.

Oh, Dog, it's convenient to be a DSL user.

Hi olleolleolle,

Glad you like ruby. Not many know of this mighty Japanese scripting language. I was/am amazed with its power. But then I am language junkie. I used it on a previous job, a fun dot com that unfortnately is a dot gone. But at least I got to write some ruby.
