The .Xdefaults file is a much better way to change styles than I used for the aterm app.. I used the command line for all that stuff - see the /opt/aterm/dsl-aterm file for more ..
To start, make sure you have the latest gnu-utils.. It had the mkfontdir file added to it.
Download your favorite fonts, like the artwiz fonts from the apt-get repository or synaptic.
Run the command " update-fonts-dir misc " to update the fonts.dir file .. Add this text to the command line in the file /opt/aterm/dsl-aterm for a quick change .. -fn -artwiz-anorexia-medium-r-normal--11-110-75-75-p-90-iso646.1991-irv
Save and restart aterm .. neato - pop-a-wheelie !
