If your speaking of your NTFS - XP partition - it is read-only.. Only because it is NTFS.. ( it's a godsend sometimes, cause XP don't like linux.)
You can make a FAT 16/32 partition, and share apps betwen both OS's .. You mount them in the same way , they are read/write always , unless you need root user to access writes , depends on permissions ..
Making a linux partition, like ext2, is good, but XP don't read ext2 without 3rd party software. ( there is also 3rd party software for reading/writingNTFS in linux )
While DSL always recommends running from LiveCD /poorman's/frugal installs, and not HDInstalls, many people have great success with HDInstalls, and they do perform faster on older hardware.. they are simply less forgiving if you hose your system.. With a live CD/Poormans ( a cd clone of DSL on a partition ) You simply reboot, and your back where you started.. reinstalls are rare, and upgrades are MUCH easier, especially with DSL's release times of 1-2 version upgrades per month ..
Especially for a new user, the LiveCD with a fat32 partition is a good start. You can backup your liveCD setups, install extensions, and learn the system with a little more brawn, and much less finesse.. You'll have access to the files on both OS's, and can easilt transfer files, documents, downloads, music files, etc. from OS to OS..
From here you can learn howto install and boot from a USBkey, and get to know frugal installs or HDCopies of DSL ( not installed- just cloned ) They run very fast when loaded to your RAMspace.. With the LiveCD setup, especially when running the entire filesystem from ram, You can actually read/write just like a Hard Drive install, and it's even faster than a HDInstall, in my opinion, On a healthy CPU, with 128MB ram or more, you'll enjoy the snappy response, and not even be aware of the fact your running from a compressed filesystem. And with the addition of the large DSL repository, you could keep busy for a long while before commiting to a true hard drive install .. I only run clones and LiveCD's - mainly because of my involvement with DSL development.. We may have 10-12 pre-release versions before they go public. Easy upgrades and installs are a necessity for me ... I can compile, save, setup skins, fonts, wallpapers, install and test new programs and apps, and do most everything a hard drive installed system can do for most usual tasks ..
Here is my personal screenshot repository.. these are all from liveCD/clones http://www.creativesound.com/ares/
My thoughts..
