I have DSL running on my Toshiba 425CDT, harddisk install. A couple of issues with the window size. The hardware only supports 800x600; no problem in and of itself, but a couple of apps act strangely.

First, Sylpheed's window cannot be resized. It comes up in something larger than 800x600 and I cannot more it up far enough to get hold of the window resize tabs on the bottom corners of the window.

Second, Ted comes up sized OK, but all of the windows for selecting fonts or options are sized way too wide. Fortunately, the vertical sizing is short enough that I can move the window around to resize it left to right.

Just thought someone might have an idea on how to work with Sylpheed and that the Ted authors could fix the non-main windowing problem.

Change the sylpheed command - i.e. the command that's run when you click the sylpheed icon or run it from the Fluxbox menu to "sylpheed -geometry 640x480".
Not sure about Ted, but you might want to check out some of its config files.

Just a thought... If you are using the fbdev xserver, are you using the proper vga= code at the boot prompt?
You might try this:
boot: knoppix vga=787
That will give you 800x600, with 16 bpp.
The DSL default (in 0.5.3, anyway) is vga=791, which is 1024x768
That would cause the applications to be bigger than the screen you have,
or so I would think. Also, I do have one machine where the windows cannot be resized due to a mouse setup problem (I think) I have a serial mouse there.
Finally, hold down the Alt key, and you can drag a window around, so you can get
at the bottom corners to resize it.

The ALT key solved the moving around problem and I could resize Sylpheed.

I have changed the boot code to boot in 800x600, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. (I am using fbdev.) I've noticed that several apps these days assume everyone uses 1024x768, just as many assume unlimited RAM and disk space.
