I believe you can apt-get the application It is called mt-st, a tape control program.
install dsl-dpkg.dsl to get apt-get working. ( download dsl-dpkg from repository ) ( if using 0.7 or 0.7.1, type in a terminal)
mydsl-load "enter location of downloaded dsl-dpkg.dsl" sudo su apt-get update apt-get install mt-st
That should do it. If you don't have an internet connection on the machine your working on, download the file before you need it, and put it on a floppy and bring it with you. download the mt-st_0.7-2_i386.deb from Debian ( its only 26k )
and from root terminal, install it ... sudo su cd /floppy dpkg -i mt-st_0.7-2_i386.deb
