I ordered a damsmalllinux cd but being new to computing--don't know how to set the BIOS, etc. in order to boot this  cd.  How do I do this? Thanks.

There is an entry in the Docs about this.

Please read it before you ask any more questions.

It's called something like "Before you begin (your bios and U(sb))

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards, you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, cause if you play it forwards, it installs Windows.

You need to make sure your comp can boot from usb; then you need to find out how to change bios setting to enable usb booting; if your comp dont have the capability, you need to create a boot floppy and bootstrap from there; if you do not have floppy nor bootusb ; you need to do frugal install to hardisk then bootstrap from hd to usb; if you do not have a hardisk; you need to boot from the cdrom or bootstrap from cdrom to usb; You can see how difficult it is to answer your questions as the possibility is endless. read the doc from the link below; if you have specific problems, I am sure ppl here are more than glad to help.

more specific to your enquiry; if you have a Dell inspiron 750m laptop or T41 IBM thinkpad laptop you press F12 while booting up to choose boot source. if you have amibios bios chip you press DEL to go to setup screen; depending on versions the procedure to setup is different; if you have Pentium 90 ALR desktop you press ESC while booting to go to setup screen. You should get some idea by now why people are reluctant to answer your question? but believe me; its not a big deal once you dare to try.

Thanks! I need all the help I can get.
I guess what I'm asking is "how do I  do this cd-rom booting enabled step" in winxp for an Inspiron 1100?

I found out that what I had to do was go into my BIOS (hold down F2 key and boot) and goto  list of booting devices, move the cd-rom device up to the top of this list and enable it.
I re-booted my PC (with the DSL cd inside) and there it was--works great and looks like alot of fun.
Thanks to all that helped me get started on DSL.
