Howdy!

I came across an old Sony VAIO laptop that had a problem common among F-series VAIOs: it would shut down randomly, generally during boot up. This was due to faulty APM  thinking the processor was overheating when it wasn't. As this was easily fixed in most distros that either use GRUB or have the 'prompt' option set in lilo.conf, I made the old thing my Linux distro 'test bed'. The HD install (via the handy script) of DSL makes it a bit harder, it seems. It gives me an extremely narrow margin in which to pull up lilo's BOOT: prompt. As soon as I did get the machine running reliably again, I set lilo.conf's prompt option and shortened the default timeout in the file. I also ran the "enable APT" script in the menu.

Next I edited /etc/apt/sources.list and uncommented the "testing" trees. I then commented the one currently enabled tree and ran apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade

Now I have a beautifully working Debian Sarge install that has breathed new life in to this old laptop. TIt took under an hour and worked without a hitch. I've since installed DSL to a USB key and will use that as a portable environment as well as Debian install staging ground.

Nice work. Thanks a lot!
