The default desktop style contrubutes to the first impression.

I find the simple style a little too simple. For my taste there is too less contrast.
I would suggest to make one of these the default desktop style:

Artwiz
Line
Operations
Spiff

This has already been addressed with 1.0 RC1.  I dunno if the same style will be used in 1.0 final, but the current default style is quite an attractive one.
