RE: lilo, I think you'll always need a bootloader like lilo, but you should be able to modify it so that you never see it, or only see it for a second, before it automatically selects and loads DSL. I can't remember off hand, but I think possibly there's a file called something like lilo-config, which you edit to change the boot options like how long to wait before booting the default system, then I think you run "mkliloboot" to register these new settings. maybe... Oops, OK, just searched for "mkliloboot", it looks like the file you want to edit is "/etc/lilo.conf", then you want to sudo su lilo And that should implement the new settings. No need for mkliloboot.
Or there's the Grub bootloader if you want to try something different.
RE: Downloading DSL -> the small size of DSL is definitely a major plus when looking for a linux to download. Now that I have cable it's much less of an issue, but even so, 50MB vs 700MB, 1.4GB, 2.1GB... I know which one I'm choosing! And it does virtually everything the bloated, slow distros do in over 14x the size! (minimum!) And if it doesn't do what you want it to do "out of the box", you can usually find small packages to add to it that will add the functionality you want!
