checking for USB

I then rebooted and pressed F2 and selected failsafe and it all went fine ???

Do you have no usb, or perhaps a faulty or unconventional usb adapter?
If bypassing usb detection is ok for you then you can try entering "dsl nousb" at the boot prompt.
