It's my first day using DSL so please be gentle with me! javascript:emoticon(':)')
smilie

I've managed to boot DSL from the CD on my main machine, but when trying on another PC (the one I want to do a HD install to) I am getting a Kernel Panic with the following error message - :VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:03

Presumably DSL is trying to mount this to RAM and while the machine generating the error has less ram than my main machine (228MB as opposed to 768MB) it should still be comfortably within the bounds of DSL I would imagine.

The machine generating the error is my main machine, which already has 2 distros installed, Xandros at hda1 and Suse at hdb3, obviously on 2 separate drives. It's an AMD K6/2 500 processor.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what could be causing the error, as this machine has happily booted everything else I've thrown at it in the past and will happily run Knoppix.

Any help gratefully received! If I need to provide further information for you to be able to help I'm more than happy to do so!

Thanks!

All sorted now!

i resorted to that old favourite of ripping everything out of the machine that was non-essential, reset the bios and got it to boot.

Now to keep adding parts back in until I find where the problem was and then move onto the hard drive install!

Hey,

I am trying to boot DSL from a compact flash and got the same kernel panic error (the same files on my usb pen drive works fine). I searched the forum and only found this topic dealing with this problem, so I guess a simple error is hiding behind this panic but I can't find it, if anyone could help that could be really helpfull :)

Chickenman, I was very surprised and discombobulated when I got kernal panic in an HD install on a machine that booted from CD just fine.

I guess this is as good a place as any to share what I figured out:

CFDisk worked just fine to create the partitions. It also changed the filesystem from FAT32 to Linux but seemed to have some difficulty making the switch from NTFS.

There may be another way of doing this, but what wound up happening on my fourth try at a HDD install at about midnight was to use QTParted to format the Linux partition I created with CFDisk.

The machine boots up beautifully now so I can only assume that it had to do with the formatting of the partition.

Sorry,  I don't do windows.
