I am Linux newbie.

Can I connect to the internet, when running DSL from my CD drive?

I am using a U.S.Robotics 56K Performance Pro Modem, pn R24.0208.00

Modem is on /dev/ttyS4 ("COM 5" w/ Win 98SE)

My dialup speed is usually at 28k.

I left modem port speed at 115200, as suggested.

I got message No Modem found, and entered the port by hand

After completing the PPP configuraton, I am not able to connect to the internet. Nothing happens. I get no error messages. I do not hear my modem attepting to dial out.

I tried to connect to the internet using another distro, Feather Linux. After completing the configuration, and getting nothing, I clicked on PPPstaus and got a message that the modem was busy

Am I in error in thinking that I can connect to the internet with out installing DSL on the hard drive?

Any suggestions

A hard drive install is not going to solve the modem issue!

I am not familiar with the particular USR modem you are using, but I do know that my own internal USR and my Conexant were what are called "winmodems", which is a software modem that does not run under anything except windows. Besides not letting you connect under Linux, these devices suck up your system resources and can even cause problems when you do not use them.

The machine I am typing this on has a horror story with a Lucent WinModem that nobody really wants to hear. ;)

I picked myself up an external serial modem and could not be happier. I can connect running any live CD I choose and literally never get unexpectedly kicked off line in the middle of a download.

Yea, I know; it's a few bucks, but it really is worth it.

Your modem may be assigned to some strange serial port designation.

Try opening an xterminal window and type this exact command:

dmesg | grep tty -A 2 -B 2

It should tell you some more about your serial port assignments.

Or this:

dmesg | grep serial -A 2 -B 2

to get information on a serial device without a port assigned to it.

even if this is not a winmodem, surely: it will not be a ttys, it will be a usb device (cannot remember what they are under in /dev.

although i suspect this is a winmodem

I have the US Robotics Performance Pro Modem mod. 5610B in two seperate computers and have always been able to connect using DSL.

I have it set to "ttyS4" in both computers and have run from the CD drive.

I have sent query's to the modem using various "live distros" and have had mixed results.Sometimes the query sends back a negative report but when I try to dial it works.

Seems like you should at least hear it dial out unless the modem sound is "muted".
