Hello everybody!

Now I have read up a little bit about the "triple des encryption" and how it works. Although it's just 168-bit encryption it might suit my needs. But the snag is that I can't get it to work. The last try I made I dedicated an entire usb-drive (formatted in fat32) for my backup file. I issued the following boot time options: dsl protect xsetup and as before I was prompted to give a password and retype it. I did all that and the boot-process continued and I ended up with an unrestored desktop environment. OK, I rebooted to see if I would be prompted for a password. No, it booted just as usual and when I checked /mnt/sda1 there is still a backup.tar.gz file that I'm able to open in emelfm. I used an original DSL 1.1 cd for this tryout. And I don't know what to do next. Is there a required lenght for the password or something? Thankful for any answer that might help me. It would just be so "cool" to be able to use this new feature.

I'm working with DSL 1.1 in the triple boot form, I type in boot options "dsl protect" and then at the boot time it ask me about a password and confirmation. Then it restore my backup without problems, in my harddisk I found a backup.des that I can't read in emelfm because the encriptation. When I boot without "dsl protect" the backup isn't restored, the desktop is a standard desktop, and when I make a reboot it makes a backup.tar.gz with the actual descktop settings.

It's poosible, in your case, that the backup.tar.gz is the old unencripted backup, and you have to find the new backup.des in a different path, or give to backup-restore the correct path to the backup.des.

I hope this can help you, sorry for my english.

Hello Onyarian!

Thanks a lot for your reply. Roberts already gave me the hint I needed to understand what to do. My problem was that I didn't realize that I had to restore my backup.tar.gz and then make a backup again to get it to work. I just thought that it worked Knoppix where you just have to type the password twice and press enter and that's it. That's to encrypt the whole home directory though. So thanks a lot anyway!
