the company that my dad works for wants to possibly replace one of their servers running fedora core 1 with dsl, but dsl needs to meet a few rather hefty requirements...

could a dsl server handle over 2 million hits per month?
how easy would it be to update applications, and add patches?
how secure is dsl?

thanks

DSL can be used as a server just like any other linux system.

However, my advice for running an "updatable" server is to set up a true Debian system that can be "upgraded" as a distro with apt-get.

If you don't want to install Debian from scrach, you can always find a debian server distro or even install KNOPPIX to hard drive (do a true Debian install) and then remove all of the extra crap via apt-get remove.

Because DSL uses non-standard installs, specifically in the area of the x-server (KDrive/TinyX/Freedesktop.org instead of Xfree86 or XOrg), you cannot upgrade your DSL dist via apt-get upgrade

Finally, for 2 million hits /month I would use Apache + addons instead of Monkey for the HTTP server.

Apache is the right tool for that job.

Doing a HD install and using synaptic would work

You could download apache and all needed plugins with that

If all else fails use ClarkConnect or The SME Server or practically any server distro from Linuxiso.org

It probably wouldnt be too hard to setup a decent webserver...2million hits a month isnt too bad, thats a decent sized webhosting company...(hell my home connection got over 9k hits in a day (serving small stuff, non-php or whatever) that was a bad bandwidth day let me tell ya!!!!)

If you do a minimum install of Fedora and use Webmin to administer it it shouldn't be hard at all...
