Strange that both method you used did not work.

With apt-get, probably just wait for a couple of days before you try again.  The maintainers may be updating the dependency links and may have made a mistake somewhere.  Check the changelog of the apache package at the debian website.

With compile-from-source, at what point did you have problems?  This may be due to inappropriate settings you used during the ./configure stage.  Or a missing development library even.

I have had problems with the timezone and apt-get when I didn't have gnu-utils.dsl installed first.  Try that.

I needed Apache, MySQL and PHP, so I've been using XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html) which is a package that has

Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, gdbm, zlib, expat, Sablotron, libxml, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class, ncurses, mod_perl, FreeTDS, gettext, mcrypt, mhash, Turck MMCache, SQLite and IMAP C-Client
.

Hardly a "Damn Small" approach, but since I hadn't really worked with each of the packages and had concerns with the amount of time it would take me to get each set up and playing nicely together, this was a great find.  Up and running on the first shot.

The download is about 40 MB.  I keep mine on the DSL LiveCD and have it set to automatically untar.

When I get some time I'm going to explore removing the stuff my app doesn't need so I can fit everything into a 128MB CF with room to spare.

Enjoy!
