I run DSL installed on an old Compaq Armada 7790DMT (64 MB RAM, Pentium 233 MHz, 5GB HD) and it works fine. I couldn't get the Mplayer package to work, something that complicated a few things, and I have to modprobe my soundcard (ESS1878) in bootlocal.sh in order to make it work. I also have some minor problems with the charset in some applications (like Dillo). Can't use the UTF-8 character set, but I guess the problem actually lies in Dillo itself. I've changed the the /etc/environment-file of course.
Why does the DSL distro come with Firefox version 0.9? The 0.9 version is pretty old, unstable and insecure... To remove an installed package is also a very complicated affair..
