Hmm, nobody replied when I said I had a similar problem getting it to connect in a thread in apps (iirc). Try connecting like this and see if it still hangs:
/connect yourscreenname login.oscar.aol.com:5190
EDIT: I hadn't been able to connect via naim since I posted the question last weekend (iirc), but I was able to just now. I was also able to use pidgin/gaim the whole while so I don't know what's going on.
If you want to use gaim, you can get that via MyDSL. It's in the GTK2 section.
