you could try probeing, from the console type X -configure
the x MUST be uppercase x will then try and configure your system . This must be done as root , if this work a config file will be generated X will tell you where. start it with the command left by X if it is a working x enviroment then you can copy it  to the usual place!!!! Goodluck :D
