hi all    I have noticed  a problem with memory being used up after dsl has been up and running and will crash at that point
If i close the xwindow before it crashes and restart all is well untill again the memory get eaten up once more
This happen on 3 different pc and has happened with with all versions going back to 7.1 I have done lots of serching on form and dont see anything on this subject This happens with hd install and live cd

Love dsl very much and keeps getting better except this little problem

Thanks

It is possible that a memory leak exists in Xvesa, or maybe some programs do not play nice with the Xserver and prevent it from releasing memory when no longer needed.

Is there a specific application that causes the memory usage for Xvesa to grow continuously after repeated startup / exit / startup cycles of the same application?

If not, any details of this leak should be reported to freedesktop.org developers although they will probably complain that the Xvesa server version that is used in DSL is too old for them to debug and fix.

In the meantime, you might be able to protect against crashes by setting up a swap file or a swap partition.

Thanks for the quick reply
The problem seems to be with Xvesa as just booting causes the same problem

Did a test last night using Xfbdev insted and doesnt have the problem
Running 7.3 on toshiba laptop with no harddrive and only 32megs of memory and it doesnt crash running Xfbdev as im using it to type this so memory is not the problem

Adding a swap file doesnt prevent Xvesa from crashing, just takes longer

Thanks again de ve3stz
