When I run X in 8-bit (Xvesa, 800x600) mode the colors are all screwed up. The colors look inverted and there's an awful lot of blue.

The laptop is a Compaq Armada 1530D, and the monitor is capable of running 256 colors at a max resolution of 800x600 (works well in winblows). 4-bit mode works flawlessly, but feels a bit colorless.

Any ideas anyone?

I don't have a solution, but if it helps you feel better I'm having the same issue with my Canon Innova 350CD notebook.  I seem to recall Windows running with more colors, but the Xvesa only displays normal colors with 4-bit color.  According to the command "Xvesa -listmodes" my hardware supports psudocolors (not really sure what that means) at 800x600x8.  There seems to be a number of posts about using framebuffering and whatnot in the laptop board, but I haven't had any luck yet.  The only real problem with the 4-bit color is that some of the applications (xmms, dillo, ...) won't start up.
