Thanks, PersonalBackup works only under a Redhat install.

I guess backup is not a feature for DSL distro. I have been playing with ubuntu and various backup tools available. sbackup and KDar is pretty good.

All this is helping me to learn Linux being a Linux Newbie from the dark Microsoft world.

Not that this helps, but DSL is sort of a semi-serious, general-purpose kinda distro...it wouldn't really be sufficient, as is, for a serious production environment.  So yeah, backup isn't really a part of it.

Since it is Linux, you can of course make DSL what you want it to be.  However, it may not be as easy to accomplish as with other distros due to the lack of many programs and libraries that are standard with the "big guys".

I can only speak from my own experiences, but from what I've seen DSL is great to use from an enduser or developer's point of view, but not so much from an admin's point of view. You're probably correct in thinking ubuntu might be more appropriate, unless you enjoy tinkering.

I promote DSL in its various compressed installs.
As such, backup is quite different than a traditionally hard drive installed system. Take for example the additional applications that we call extensions. You would not want to include them in your backup. They are large and static, ie., not changing. They therefore are are stored separately from the backup using the mydsl boot option or they are stored in the root of the boot device. Think write once read many. If they were included in the backup then it would only slow down the backup and make it quite large.
The backup that DSL provides is really meant for home and opt. which is easily done. To make a GUI that traverses all over the filesystem would not be very useful. Besides we already have the file manager emelfm with a button "add to filetool" which provides this functionality.

I am looking for a backup extension where I can use it to backup Windows shares. I was planning to add a 200 GB HD, mount and use it as a backup storage for Windows shares. Maybe a normal backup every 7 days and the rest, incremental.

I want to build DSL as general purpose server (ie FTP), backup tool  provide normal, incremental backup on a scheduled basis. Since DSL is so small, powerful, flexable and stable, it would be nice to use it to do backup jobs. I think it would be a great additional to DSL extension set to provide simple server, backup and other robust services using DSL as compare to the bigger brothers.

I bet if they were persistent, someone could force-fit PersonalBackup to work as a MyDSL extension.

It could take some work, though...
