I have had a couple of freezeups,,ie was online in dillo at wikipedia and hit a link and the system froze..waited a bit but then turned off and rebooted..this can not be a good thing..so wonder if there is a keyboard command that will kill the current running program and put me on the desktop..I found ctrl alt back closes x but no keyboard entry unfroze..ie esc ctrl alt delete..this happened also in eboard..think it is a memory issue  but how to get out once froze
need some keyboard commands.thanks for any
adding..was attempting something else in the fm and discovered keys lists the keyboard commands...this does nothing for the freeze...have been testing multitasking opportunities and will have to limit..dillo was the only program running at the time with pppdial but I had opened after closeing opera so may have got a flood with opera still in ram and dillo tasking..if that makes any sence...seems to have started when I added the 130meg swap on the second drive to replace the 50 on the primary..strange..
The question would be how swap relates to ram ie opera open with beaverin tray then opera closed and dillo opened  and used..and freezes...or xmms open not playing in workspace one and opera in tray in workspace two and when I click pppdial freeze...no xmms no freeze...should I wait "time" before opening to clear ram? or is this total babble..sorry..frozen

You need to create a linux swap partition if you are running out of memory or buy more RAM.

To kill a process, press

CTRL-ALT-F3

to go to another virtual terminal and type

ps -a | more

to display the processes.  Find the PID number for the process. For example, it might be "156 Dillo"

Then type:

kill -9 156

or you can just kill all processes named dillo

killall dillo

Then press

CTRL-ALT-F2

to return to the graphical mode.

Thanks for that...when frozen no command is possible and at the moment it is a solitare with n0 multi users...I could play a cd and have beaver in the tray while online with the 50meg swap on the primary but wanted a storage partition and had room for a 130 meg swap on a second drive..this is when I started experiencinfg the  freeze...the swap appears to be activated at boot could it be that it is not on? sorry will have to test more

I would make sure that you created the swap partition as a "Linux Swap Partition" type in cfdisk.

Also, that you formatted the partition after creating it

sudo su
mkswap /dev/hdb1

where hdb1 = location of your specific swap partition.

The drive is hdc..primary and cd are hda and hdb on ide1..hdc is on ide2...hdc has two partitions..hdc1/hdc2..hdc1 is 130meg linux..hdc2 is 130 meg linux swap..I mke2fs for both and mkswap /dev/hdc2  and swap on as far as I know..there are no dos partitions on the drives to my knowledge..when I boot the dma is on and dsl posts "useing swap on hdc2" perhaps I am expecting to much of dsl..I was playing a cd with xmms also tried cd dock,,with bever in the tray ready to copy text..opera was online..I was reading posts..clicked beaver to pop up and freeze...so should I expect to be able to do this on dsl with 130 meg swap and 48 meg ram on dx2 66mhz? will larger swap help..the board max's at 64 meg and I do not have a match pair to get 64 so 48 may find a pair but at the moment looking to understand what the problem is..I was listening to a cd the other day and checking the hotmail but forget if bever was open..usually keep it in the tray...guess the question is what can I expect in the way of multi tasking..functionality would dictate that opera and the bever work together but three programs should be possible one would think..maby I am just use to the convienience of that on this machine with win95..will test some more but do not like turning off the freeze...then again if the system holds after many of these..gatta lovdsl
